New owner (nearly) in France

Postby Paul64 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 3:29 pm

Hi all,

I have ordered an iQ2 Diesel here in France, well, in April this year I ordered and iQ2 Diesel here in France and am expecting it sometime next month...!
It's going to replace my Smart ForTwo CDi as I got fed up with the bouncy ride now the French have found the speed hump way of road control and, the slow-witted gearbox.
I specced it up with the JBL / Navi package and it's in white of course to counter the sun in the summer. It's still not a commom sight over here so hopefully, it'll be a bit special for a while longer at least.
All being well, I'm going to be improving on the Smart's 52-55mpg with the larger, more torquey engine and manual box and, it's going to get quite a few km under the wheels in short order including a trip home from Nice to Liverpool at Christmas.

Looking forward to a more comfortable, 'chic-er' ride over the coming months and the occasional flash of (dim?) headlamps when Toyotas meet on the M6 on a rainy night.....

Good luck with it.

As per my thread I've just ordered an iQ2 1.0 the diesel isn't available over here yet!

I considered and test drove a Smart and the iQ drives much nicer in my opinion.
:)

Looking forward to collecting mine nearly next week.

Picked up the car this weekend - almost exactly 8 months after ordering!
Very happy so far and revelling in the smoother ride and quiet engine. Even with using minimal throttle, the extra torque over the Smart is noticable though I suppose with an engine nearly twice as big, it should be....
First impressions good with only the following points of note:

Doors not currently locking when moving off from start - can this be programmed in at the agent I wonder?
Headlamps need to have the auto operation made less sensitive - they currently come on driving under the shadow of a tree when it's sunny...
Is there a 'Mute' button on the audio system? The volume winds down pretty slowly when using the wheel controls.
One foglamp needs to have the aim adjusted slightly.
Headlamps do seem to be a bit dull compared with the Smart and main beam a bit 'weedy'....

Fuel consumption this weekend seems to be around 5.4l/100km - 52mpg - according to the computer. Obviously, that will be checked when I fill it up next time.

I'll update later when I have more impressions.

Not sure if you can have the 'anti-hijack' locks programmed. Would be interested to know as it's a nice touch, especially for when my wife drives it alone.

Might be worth checking if the sensor for the headlights is clean, mine seem to be the opposite i.e. Sometimes I manually put them on because the car hasn't done so automatically.

The only way I've 'muted' the radio is by holding down the pwr button and switching it off. Takes a moment but works! Best way is to get an integrated phone system which auto-mutes, but they aren't cheap.

I agree about the headlights, they aren't brilliant. But they are okay. When there are no other cars around having the fogs on helps a bit.

Keep us updated on the MPG. I'd be surprised if you don't get 70mpg+ with careful driving. Something like a BMW 320d can achieve 50mpg easily, so why can't a tiny, small engined eco-car beat that significantly!?

Enjoy!

Well, a month passes and nearly 5000km on the car!
Drove up to the UK for new year then back a couple of days later. Car ran well, averaging about 65mpg in the UK at usual cruising speeds and about 55mpg in France at about 80mph average cruise for the trip in Europe.
I had the sensor for the headlamps reset to the minimum sensitivity (default is mid-range) and that's a more realistic operational range. Seems the doorlocks cannot be set for 'anti-hijack'.

Back in France for three weeks now and the car is going well now it's all run in. Headlamps on dip beam seem to be OK in reality, main beam is definately a bit weedy. JBL is good but lacking a bit of Oomph when giving Rainbow and AC/DC a good going over.
Satnav worked very well and I notice they use a French speaker for place and road names when it's set to English language - no more comical pronounciations like I have with my Garmin on the other car!
I tend to find myself using the shift lights to change up - there's plenty of torque to carry you through, even at these low rpms - it's a more relaxing drive than I thought a manual change in traffic might be.
I will be getting a set of rubber mats I think - the driver's floor mat is already showing wear where my heel is placed - not good.

Satisfied though? I think so and would certainly look at another one next time - 100% upgrade on the Smart.
