I've just received the latest recall notice from VOSA. This time Toyota have discovered that they did such a lousy job of cleaning the brake pipes during assembly that foreign matter can cause a braking failure. They plan to replace the master cylinder and all the brake pipes so it's a major repair.
I can see the point - if you've got a car that is prone to a sticking throttle and which loses it's power steering if you run over too many white lines it would be nice to think that the brakes would work!
Seriously though, does anyone know how many cars are affected? How many people found out the hard way when their brakes failed? If there is foreign matter in the brake pipes, why aren't they replacing the ABS unit or the calipers?
If they can't keep things clean in a state of the art Japanese car factory what is the chance of improving things if they rebuild the brake system over the pit of my local Toyota dealer?
